(KRON) — A woman who was shopping inside a Safeway in Martinez on Wednesday was injured after an elderly driver outside confused the accelerator with the brake pedal and plowed into the side of the store, according to authorities.
The Martinez Police Department responded around 3:46 p.m. to the Safeway located at 6688 Alhambra Avenue. Officers learned that a 76-year-old woman who was attempting to park in the parking lot depressed the accelerator instead of the brake, jumped a curb, and collided with the east side of the grocery store.
“The force of the collision caused an ice machine to fall and strike a 71-year-old female customer inside the store,” police wrote. “The elderly female customer fell and struck her head on the ground.”
