FREMONT, Calif. (KRON) — A police standoff Thursday morning in Fremont came to an end after the suspect, who was barricaded inside a stolen UPS delivery truck, surrendered to authorities, according to law enforcement. The standoff has shut down Grimmer Boulevard at Auto Mall Parkway.
The hours-long standoff brought a heavy police presence to the area near the Interstate 880 onramp. Officers were seen with guns drawn, as a SWAT team surrounded a UPS truck in the middle of the road.
The incident began with a pursuit of the stolen truck, which was driving erratically around 1:30 a.m. in the 5500 block of Cushing Parkway. The pursuit led to Grimmer Boulevard, where the truck became disabled. The suspect, who police said was possibly armed, surrendered and was detained by 5:45 a.m., according to Fremont PD.
Grimmer Boulevard has since reopened.
