SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A video of a wild police chase released by the San Francisco Police Department Thursday looks like a scene out of a “Spider-Man” movie.
A man is recorded on a drone’s camera as he bolts out of a stolen car midway across the bridge, dangerously climbs over the railing, and navigates under the bridge using rock-climbing maneuvers. The failed escape attempt ended with police taking the man into custody. (Watch in the video player above).
SFPD said the incident began on the afternoon of April 1, when officers spotted a gray car driving in San Francisco on 8th and Market streets. The car had been reported stolen out of South San Francisco.
Officers attempted the pull the driver over, but the car did not yield, and continued traveling toward the Bay Bridge. Police launched a drone to follow from the air, while officers on the ground followed in pursuit.
Once the car entered the bridge, California Highway Patrol officers joined the chase. Video shows the car suddenly stopping on the bridge near Treasure Island.
Officers were shocked when they realized that the suspect was climbing under the bridge, 500 feet above the ocean, in a dramatic escape attempt.

“He’s on the crossbeams under the bridge!” one officer shouted.
A police drone continued recording the man as he precariously climbed from beam to beam. At times, his legs are dangling while he maintains his grip, video shows.

SFPD and the CHP called in a crisis intervention team to help convince the man to climb back up to safety. By nightfall, the vehicle theft suspect surrendered and was taken into custody, police said.
