REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (KRON) — Last weekend, BINI made history as the first Filipino girl group to perform at the world-renowned Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Filipinos worldwide felt a sense of representation as their nation’s flag was showcased to millions of viewers watching on the festival’s livestream.
Filipino culture is seemingly getting the biggest spotlight it has ever had globally. Ube, a purple yam grown in the Philippines, has taken over social media and is more popular than ever.
Kim Chiu, one of the Philippines’ most famous actresses, said “it’s time” for the Southeast Asian country’s culture to be known worldwide.
“It’s the Philippines’ time now because the Philippines has a lot of talents to offer — singing, dancing, all forms of entertainment. Filipinos have it… and acting,” Chiu tells KRON4. “I think it’s time for Filipinos to be known worldwide.”

Chiu, who was in Redwood City’s Fox Theatre for the first stop of the “Love, Kim Pau” world tour, was backstage with co-star Paulo Avelino before their performance. Avelino added that he was proud of BINI for making waves across the globe.
“I’m very proud of our fellow Filipinos who are making waves across the globe, especially BINI who just performed at Coachella,” he said. “There’s a sense of Filipino pride that you feel when someone, when anything Filipino, goes global, and one perfect example is BINI.”
