SAN LEANDRO, Calif. (KRON) — Chain linked fences, dilapidated parking lots, and cinder blocks are some of the things people see while visiting parts of San Leandro’s grungy shoreline.
On Thursday, East Bay officials vowed to turn the waterfront’s blight into beauty.
Congresswoman Lateefah Simon recently secured a $1,092,000 Community Project Funding grant for San Leandro’s Shoreline Development Project.
Secured federal funding will be used for projects aimed at transforming the shoreline into a recreational and community hub for residents, as well as investments in clean water infrastructure.
Mayor Juan Gonzalez said, “This funding will help strengthen shoreline infrastructure, protect bay waters, and enhance open space opportunities for residents and visitors alike.”
“$1 million doesn’t do everything, but what it does is it accumulates into a commitment that San Leandro has taken,” Simon said. The congresswoman said she will continue pushing for additional funding for improvements.
