SAN LEANDRO, Calif. (KRON) — A welfare check at the San Leandro Marina Thursday night ended in a fatal police shooting and three officers placed on leave.
A man was shot and killed by police after pointing a gun at officers, according to police. The San Leandro Police Department said a friend of the man asked police to check in on him because he had made suicidal threats and was suffering from depression.
Officers responded to his home on the 14500 block of Santiago Road. They said they searched for him at his house but later found him sitting inside a car near the boat launch at the San Leandro Marina.
Police said they spoke to him for several minutes while he was in the car before he allegedly pulled a gun on them.
Officers ended up shooting and killing the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Three officers have been placed on administrative leave. None were injured.
Police said they will conduct criminal and administrative investigations into the shooting, while the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office will conduct a concurrent probe.
The identities of the victim and the officers involved have not been released.
